10 Fact's about K-Town

That's right I just used K-town while referring to our beautiful Knoxville, just trying to blog and stay hip with all of the cool Bloggers.... Sadly I am not hip so let's get down to the nitty gritty.

1) Knoxville was named after Henry Knox, President Washington's War Secretary.

2) James White was the first known settler of Knoxville.

3) The first train arrived in Knoxville in 1855.

3) Knoxville is headquarters of the Tennessee Valley Authority, created 1933, which provided hydroelectric power cheaply and abundantly to thousands.

4) Seven lakes surround Knoxville: Cherokee, Douglas, Ft. Loudon, Melton Hill, Norris, Watts Bar and Tellico.

5) Knoxville College was founded in 1875.

6) Currently Knoxville’s city population is over 170,000.

7) The "Million Dollar Fire of 1897" destroyed most of Gay Street. 

8) David Glasgow Farragut was born in Knoxville in 1801 and was appointed to the rank of Admiral - the first ever in American History. 

9) McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville is named in honor of Knoxville native and Fighter Pilot Lt. Charles McGhee Tyson who was shot down over Britain's North Sea in WWI. 

10) The soft drink Mountain Dew had its beginnings with Hartman Beverages in Knoxville in the late 1940's.
